By the middle of May 2026 we had fixed the midnight kick-offs, the AI clubs crowding out real managers and a long list of smaller problems in the shared online world. The game worked. Players still drifted away.
When we looked at why, the answer was not a bug. A shared world that runs on its own clock asks every manager to be available when the game is ready — for the transfer deadline, for the matchday, for the board meeting. People who enjoyed the game but had jobs, exams or children kept coming back to find that their season had happened without them.
On 14 May we stopped patching and redesigned the game.
The new shape
The redesign fits in two sentences:
- Every save is a private football world. Your leagues, your clubs, your transfer market and your history belong to that save alone.
- Time only moves when you tell it to. You press a button to advance the world; if you do not press it, nothing happens — for a day or for a summer.
Everything else followed from those two rules. There is no longer a timetable to keep up with, no deadline you can miss by being asleep, and no reason for the game to send you reminders.
What had to change
A lot. Almost everything in the game had been built for a single shared world, so almost everything had to be rethought. We planned the work in stages:
- teaching the game that every club, player, match and message belongs to one world only;
- a new way of moving time, that advances one world from one date to another and plays out every day in between, in order;
- a world builder that creates a complete football world from scratch whenever you start a new game;
- and every screen of the game, so that each one shows only the world you are playing.
What stayed shared
We did not want the game to become completely solitary. Two things cross the boundary between saves: your manager profile, which follows you from save to save, and a daily leaderboard — the Elite League — that ranks clubs from different saves without letting any of them touch each other's world.
We also planned optional multiplayer leagues for later: small private leagues for up to sixteen managers, priced at one dollar per save per year to cover their running costs. They are not live yet, and we say so wherever they are mentioned.
Update, October 2026: the Elite League has since been replaced by the Online league, and the shared play we planned arrived as two free modes — the Online league and Friends — instead of paid private leagues.
The cost of the decision
A pivot like this is not free. Everything in the old shared world had been built for it, and we had to decide what to do with the clubs people had already built there. That decision, and the three days it took to rebuild the game around it, is the next entry: rebuilding the game around private saves.
Looking back from September, it is the decision we are most sure about. Everything good in ManageFC today — vacation mode that actually works, seasons you can play at your own pace, a match engine you can step into when you feel like it — depends on it.
