Mentality โ defensive to attacking
The five-step mentality slider and when each setting is the right call.
Mentality is the overall risk dial. It shifts how often your players take chances on passes, how high your defensive block sits, and how aggressively you commit numbers forward. Five steps from defensive to attacking, each one with a clear personality.
Defensive
Sit deep, soak pressure, hit on the break. Lowers possession share, reduces shots for and against. Best for away days at a top side, or protecting a 1-0 lead in the final 20 minutes.
Cautious
A defensive lean without parking the bus. Players still venture forward but recycle the ball when in doubt. Good for tricky away fixtures against equal sides.
Balanced
The default. Equal weight to risk and security. If you don't have a strong reason to bias one way, this is the safest setting for unfamiliar matchups.
Positive
Players take more attacking risks, fullbacks push higher, midfielders look for forward passes. Best at home against equal or weaker opposition. Pair with higher tempo and a moderate-to-high defensive line.
Attacking
Commit numbers, chase the game. High risk, high reward. Use when you need to break down a stubborn low block or chase a deficit. Expect to concede more on the break โ set the defensive line lower if your CBs lack pace.
Reading the match
Mentality is the easiest in-match adjustment to get right. Going a goal down at home? Shift to Positive. Holding a 2-0 lead away with 15 minutes left? Shift to Cautious or Defensive. The match engine respects the change immediately on the next phase of play.
